Electrical Engineering
Some people ask, "Your job seems pretty cool. How do I get one?"
Well, you must really LOVE math and science. If you're not passionate about both, maybe Engineering isn't right for you. If it is, then you can choose an engineering discipline that interests you.
Broadly speaking, there are five major engineering disciplines:
Engineering Joke 1: Mechanical Engineers build weapons--Civil Engineers build targets!
What You Need to become an Engineer:
Engineering is the science of problem solving. Using your analytical mind, you look at a problem and develop a solution. This requires "thinking outside the box", dedication, a curiosity and love for sciences, highly-developed mathematical skills, but most important, a passion for discovery as your work towards a solution!
If you were the geeky kid who liked to take things apart, played with a Rubik's Cube, watched science-fiction shows like Star Trek, or tried to fix somethingthat wasn't brokenyou're the typical Engineer.
What You can Expect When You become an Engineer:
Your entire mode of thinking changes. You will look at everything more critically and with less emotion. You develop a strong Type A personality, with thoughts and opinions that others perceive as bravado. Your social groups comprise mainly of engineers, scientists, doctors, or PhDs, and typically, you're an Atheist. Last, there is the money aspect: Engineering pays pretty well, but before you collect that first check, you will spend countless hours doing homework.
The best advice my Dad gave to me: Don't chase after the money--enjoy what you do because if you hate your job, it doesn't matter how much money you make!
